Adaptation to change: Major change is triggered when people face a significant discrepancy between what they expected and what actually happens during change. People adjust to change by forming new expectations that can lead to success under new conditions. (MacKay, 2018)
People living in communities affected by change must realise the intended benefits of major change and possess sufficient energy to enable the adaptation process to occur. The capacity to adapt involves the mental, emotional and physical means to incorporate new mindsets and behaviours – to absorb the key implications of a change. When the demand for change exceeds the capacity to adapt change overload occurs, which causes dysfunctional mindsets and behaviours or “future shock”. (MacKay, 2018)
